We warmly congratulate Dr Lucrecia Peinado, First Lady of Guatemala, on her new appointment as President of the Alliance of Spouses of Heads of State and Representatives of Latin America (ALMA). She succeeded H.E. Maricel Cohen de Mulino, First Lady of Panama, who led the organisation over the past year. The handover took place in New York, in the framework of the United Nations General Assembly.

During the ceremony, Mrs de Mulino reflected on her term as President:

“It has been a year of great learning and, above all, of action for those who need it most. I am proud to have represented my country in this regional effort and will continue to accompany initiatives that unite us as First Ladies and reaffirm our commitment to the well-being of the most vulnerable communities.”

Like the Summit of First Ladies and Gentlemen Global Platform, ALMA brings together First Ladies and Gentlemen around shared humanistic goals — supporting vulnerable groups and strengthening soft power. The Alliance promotes social projects across Latin America, addressing issues such as child protection, health, education, and equality.

The leadership transition was also acknowledged by Dr Cora Neumann, Founder of the Global First Ladies Alliance (GFLA), in social media:

“What you are doing in Latin America is a powerful model for the world. The spirit of shared responsibility that defines ALMA is the very reason networks like ours exist — to help connect regional leadership to a global community.”

We see special symbolism in the fact that an active member of the Summit of First Ladies and Gentlemen Global Platform community has become the head of this respected regional organisation. This milestone creates new opportunities for cooperation and deeper ties among the spouses of world leaders — partnerships grounded in shared values, empathy, and care.
