Resilience grows from the capacity to withstand impact, make sense of reality, preserve integrity, and turn understanding into responsible action. Sophiynist brings together the will to live, the strength to fight, and the wisdom to learn at the levels of the individual, community, and institution.

What It Means

Sophiynist is a worldview-based model of Ukrainian resilience, rooted in Ukraine’s history, culture, and lived social experience. At its heart is the capacity to perceive reality with both mind and heart: to discern deeper meaning in visible events, align decisions with values, and turn understanding into responsible action.

Sophiynist brings together what are often treated as opposites: freedom and responsibility, strength and wisdom, tradition and innovation, adaptation and resistance, the individual and the community, memory and the future. It manifests at four interconnected levels: individual, community, institution, and state.

How It Works in a Crisis

In a crisis, Sophiynist helps forge sustainable forms of interaction and co-creation even amidst fear, anger, and chaos.

A crisis disrupts familiar order, deepens uncertainty, and often requires people and institutions to act without ready-made answers. The strength to fight turns freedom into resistance, self-organisation, and mutual aid. The wisdom to learn helps people reflect rapidly on experience, develop new solutions, adapt their ways of acting, and avoid repeating mistakes.

A Lesson for Other Countries

The Ukrainian experience demonstrates that resilience is not merely a set of plans and resources, but a way of living meaningfully.

A society navigates prolonged crises more effectively when it can preserve its core values, learn under pressure, sustain horizontal ties, and combine cultural continuity with technological innovation.

Sophiynist is not a universal formula, but a community’s response to fundamental questions: What gives us the will to live? What are we prepared to fight for? How do we turn experience into wisdom?

The answers help a community move from survival to development.

Where It Comes From

Sophiynist is deeply rooted in Ukraine’s cultural and intellectual traditions. At its conceptual heart is Sophia-Wisdom: an image of wisdom that extends beyond knowledge to include the capacity to align action with meaning and integrate different dimensions of human existence into a coherent whole.

In modern Ukrainian philosophical thought, the concept holds an important place in the work of Serhii Krymskyi, who understood Sophia not only as a category of Christian philosophy, but also as a principle of culture: a way of transforming chaos into an ordered world imbued with meaning.

What It Looks Like Today

The full-scale war has made the mechanisms of Ukrainian resilience especially visible. Sophiynist can be seen in people’s willingness to take responsibility and self-organise; at the community level, in sustaining horizontal ties and mutual aid; at the institutional level, in adapting while maintaining the capacity to act; and at the level of the state and society, in building new forms of collective action in the face of threat.

It is also present in everyday wartime practice: keeping education and cultural life going, preserving memory and hope, creating new meaning, supporting others, and continuing to learn. The Sophiynist Manifesto articulates the core values embodied in this experience and gives Ukraine a framework for understanding its own resilience and communicating it to the world.

Limits of the Concept

Sophiynist is a way of life, not an ideology. It does not belong to any particular political, social, or religious group, is neither a religion nor an official state ideology, and cannot be imposed from above.

Sophiynist is not a slogan or a passive expectation that “everything will be fine”. Its meaning is realised through practice: responsible choice, interaction, support for others, learning, and concrete action.
